Vitesse’s 1998–99 season was one of the strongest of the late‑90s era, marked by attacking football, a new stadium atmosphere, and the unstoppable scoring form of Nikos Machlas. Playing their first full season in the GelreDome, Vitesse finished 4th in the Eredivisie with 61 points, securing European qualification. Machlas delivered a phenomenal year with 24 goals in all competitions, supported by creative threats like Martijn Reuser and Arco Jochemsen. In the KNVB Cup, Vitesse reached the quarter‑finals before falling to Feyenoord after extra time. Their UEFA Cup run ended in the second round against Bordeaux, despite a strong opening win over AEK Athens. The season combined high‑energy football, big home crowds (23,000 average), and a squad that felt on the verge of something bigger.
