In mid-1997, Ajax experienced significant changes with key players Patrick Kluivert and Winston Bogarde moving to AC Milan, and successful coach Louis van Gaal leaving for FC Barcelona. Morten Olsen took over as coach, and the club brought in new players including Michael Laudrup, Jesper Gronkjaer, Sunday Oliseh, Benny McCarthy, Wamberto, Ferdi Vierklau, Cedric van der Gun, John O'Brien, and Shota Arveladze. Ajax had a stellar 1997–98 season, winning the league by 17 points ahead of PSV and achieving a record goal difference of +90. They also clinched the KNVB Cup after a 5-0 victory over PSV in the final game. However, their UEFA Cup run ended in the quarter-finals against Spartak Moscow. Additionally, Ajax became the first Dutch football club to go public on May 11, 1998. This season stood out positively during a challenging period for the club, dating back to the 1965–66 season.
