Following their European Cup victory, PSV made a significant acquisition by signing Romário, who made an immediate impact with 19 league goals in his first season. His standout performance came in November 1989 against Steaua București, where he scored a memorable hat-trick, including a stunning solo effort. Despite Koeman's departure in 1989, PSV finished second in the league but secured the KNVB Cup by defeating Vitesse 1–0. Hiddink left the team in 1990, with Bobby Robson taking over as coach. Under Robson's guidance, PSV won two consecutive league titles, the first on goal difference alongside Ajax, and the second in the penultimate match against Groningen. Romário continued to impress, winning the league's top scorer title in 1989, 1990, and 1991, earning admiration from fans.
