One of the most unusual incidents in the 1998 World Cup qualifiers involved Scotland's match against Estonia in Tallinn on October 9, 1996. The Scots, unhappy with the quality of the floodlights during training, demanded the match be played in the afternoon. FIFA granted their request, but the Estonians were upset as it meant missing TV coverage. When the game was scheduled to begin, Estonia failed to show up, leading FIFA to award a 3-0 victory to Scotland. However, the Estonian Football Association appealed, and the match was replayed six months later, resulting in a scoreless draw. Despite this setback, Scotland only lost to Sweden and finished second behind Austria in their group. Due to being the highest-scoring runner-up in the European Zone, Scotland qualified directly for the World Cup. In their first World Cup match against Brazil, Scotland held on for a while but ultimately lost due to an own goal. After drawing 1-1 with Norway, they needed a win against Morocco while hoping Norway wouldn't beat Brazil. However, Scotland suffered a 3-0 defeat to Morocco, further compounded by Norway's victory over Brazil.
