Liverpool entered the new season with high hopes after finishing third in the previous Premiership season and winning the League, FA, and UEFA Cups. However, their start was hindered by fixture congestion, and manager Gérard Houllier fell ill during a game against Leeds United, later diagnosed with a heart condition. Assistant manager Phil Thompson took over as caretaker. Despite the crisis, Liverpool climbed to fourth by October and led the Premier League by November's end. In December, they were overtaken by Newcastle United, and striker Robbie Fowler was sold to Leeds. Liverpool briefly reclaimed the top spot in March upon Houllier's return but ultimately finished second to Arsenal. The 2001-02 season marked Liverpool's return to the UEFA Champions League, where they advanced to the quarter-finals but were eliminated by Bayer Leverkusen. During the close season, Houllier opted not to sign Nicolas Anelka but instead brought in El Hadji Diouf. Michael Owen remained the team's top scorer for the fifth consecutive season, netting 28 goals across all competitions.
