In the 1996/97 season, Grasshopper Club Zürich (GCZ) started poorly, losing the city derby to FC Zurich. However, three consecutive wins boosted their confidence for the Champions League qualifier against Slavia Prague, which they won decisively 5-0, followed by a 1-0 victory in Prague, ensuring their qualification. In the group stage, they faced Glasgow Rangers, Ajax Amsterdam, and AJ Auxerre. GCZ opened with a 3-0 win over Rangers, featuring Paul Gascoigne, and followed with a remarkable 1-0 victory against Ajax thanks to Murat Yakin’s 40-meter goal. Despite a 1-0 loss in Auxerre, they won the return match 3-1. A 2-1 defeat in Glasgow left them needing a point in their final home game against Ajax, but they lost, finishing with nine points and exiting the competition. In the domestic championship, GCZ was part of a four-way title battle with FC Sion, Neuchâtel Xamax, and Lausanne-Sports. Despite victories against Lausanne and Xamax, they lost 2-1 at home to Sion in front of 20,000 spectators, finishing third in the league. In the 1997/98 season, after struggling initially, GCZ advanced in the UEFA Cup qualifiers by defeating Coleraine FC and Brann Bergen. They drew 4-4 with Dinamo Zagreb but lost 5-0 in the return match in Zurich, with defender Boris Smiljanić playing in goal after two players were sent off. Domestically, GCZ's form improved, but coach Christian Gross left for Tottenham Hotspur, and Hanspeter Latour became interim coach. They led the league by two points at winter break. Viorel Moldovan left for Coventry City for nine million Swiss francs. Rolf Fringer succeeded Gross as head coach. Although GCZ did not win the Swiss Cup, they secured their 25th championship title with a 2-1 derby win against FC Zurich, achieving a 16-point lead with three rounds remaining.
