Inter finished third in the league and reached the UEFA Cup final in Roy Hodgson's first and only full season in charge. This third-place finish was Inter's best since the early 1990s when Lothar Matthäus and Andreas Brehme were part of the team, marking a stepping stone for future successes. A significant event for Inter in 1997 was the acquisition of Brazilian striker Ronaldo from Barcelona for a record-breaking fee. However, the season's biggest disappointment was failing to defeat Schalke 04 in the UEFA Cup final, losing the second leg on penalties at home. This defeat led to Hodgson's dismissal, despite the overall successful season.
