This season marked a significant milestone in RC Lens' history as they secured their first and only title in the French first division. Under the leadership of Daniel Leclercq, the team reached the Coupe de France final for the third time. Leclercq took over early in the season to prevent relegation to the second division in 1997. He implemented an offensive and fast-paced tactical approach, relying on key players like Jean-Guy Wallemme, Guillaume Warmuz, Anto Drobnjak, and Stéphane Ziani. Despite starting sixth in the mid-season, Lens surged to the top of the league after defeating FC Metz in their 30th game. They maintained their position until the end of the season. However, despite their success in the league, Lens lost in the Coupe de France final and the League Cup semifinals to Paris Saint-Germain.
