In 1994, 1860 Munich returned to the Bundesliga after a 13-year absence. This time, the club managed to maintain stability, featuring German football stars like Thomas Häßler and Martin Max. TSV Munich revived past glories by qualifying for the Intertoto Cup, UEFA Cup, and eventually the UEFA Champions League in the 1999-00 season. That season was particularly successful, as they won both derbies against arch-rivals Bayern Munich. However, in 2000-01, coach Werner Lorant, who had led the club to previous successes, was sacked following a 5-0 defeat to Bayern.
