As the host of the 1994 World Cup, the United States qualified automatically under coach Bora Milutinović. They began the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland at the Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit, marking the first World Cup game played indoors. In their second match, the U.S. faced fourth-ranked Colombia at the Rose Bowl and won 2-1, aided by an own goal from Andrés Escobar, who was tragically murdered in Colombia shortly after, possibly in retaliation for his mistake. Despite a 1-0 loss to Romania in their final group game, the U.S. advanced past the initial round for the first time since 1930. In the round of 16, they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by the eventual champions, Brazil.
