Early in the 1994–95 season, De Mos was dismissed and succeeded by Dick Advocaat, following a temporary stint by Kees Rijvers. During this time, PSV experienced the retirement of Van Breukelen and signed Luc Nilis in 1994, who formed a formidable partnership with 17-year-old Ronaldo. The Brazilian striker scored 30 goals in his debut season, while Nilis was named Dutch Footballer of the Year, despite the team not winning any trophies. Following an injury-plagued 1995–96 season, during which Ronaldo still netted 12 goals, he transferred to Barcelona. That season, PSV clinched the cup with a 5–2 victory over Sparta Rotterdam. In the 1996–97 season, with Harry van Raaij as chairman, Advocaat developed a squad featuring players like Phillip Cocu, Jaap Stam, Boudewijn Zenden, and Wim Jonk, leading to the Eredivisie title and Nilis finishing as the league's top goalscorer with 21 goals.
