Henk van Stee was the head coach of Excelsior in his first season, succeeding Adrie Koster. Under his leadership, the team finished second in the standings, just behind FC Den Bosch, which earned direct promotion to the Eredivisie based on goal difference (+37 compared to Excelsior's +31). In the second division, Excelsior faced teams like De Graafschap and Heracles Almelo, finishing third in Group B. FC Volendam was relegated from the Eredivisie. In the cup, Excelsior reached the third round but lost 0-2 to city rivals Sparta Rotterdam, having previously beaten FC Vinkenslag (0-5) and VVV-Venlo (2-0). Striker Mounir El Hamdaoui was the top scorer with 17 goals in 33 league matches but caused issues for Van Stee. The coach had to bench him twice due to clashes over El Hamdaoui's attitude, which Van Stee deemed unprofessional, and he temporarily trained with the second team after an escalation in early October.
