Despite two early defeats to PSV and SC Heerenveen, Ajax ended the 2004–05 season strong with eight consecutive victories, finishing second in the league, though still 10 points behind PSV. For the 2005–06 season, Ajax started with Martin van Geel as technical director. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was signed mid-season. Ajax advanced past the preliminary and group stages of the Champions League but was eliminated by Inter Milan in the first knockout round. In the league, Ajax struggled, finishing fourth but qualified for the Champions League preliminary round through the playoffs.
