This season saw the return of Frank Rijkaard, the acquisition of Nigerians Finidi George and Nwankwo Kanu, and Edwin van der Sar becoming a permanent starter. The team kicked off the Johan Cruijff Schaal with a 4-0 victory over rivals Feyenoord. They competed in the Cup Winners' Cup, easily eliminating Hajduk Split and Beşiktaş before being ousted by Parma after a 0-0 draw in Amsterdam and a 2-0 defeat at the Stadio Ennio Tardini. In the KNVB Beker, Ajax began in the third round, defeating Heerenveen 8-3 (a team they had beaten in the previous final) but were eliminated in the semi-finals by N.E.C. However, they secured their 24th league title, finishing three points ahead of Feyenoord, with Jari Litmanen as the top scorer.
