The 1999/2000 season started well for Borussia Dortmund (BVB), with six wins in their first eight matches, but things quickly turned dire as they won only once in the next 23 games. After a defeat post-winter break, coach Skibbe was suspended and replaced by Bernd Krauss, who failed to secure a single win in 11 matches and was dismissed. With relegation looming, Udo Lattek returned as coach, assisted by Matthias Sammer, who had retired due to a knee infection. They managed to guide BVB to an eleventh-place finish. In November 1999, the club decided to convert parts of its operations into a public company, officially becoming Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA by October 2000, making it the only Bundesliga team to go public. The initial share price was eleven euros, raising €130 million from 13.5 million shares. In the 2000/01 season, young coach Matthias Sammer aimed to turn things around. Despite limited signings, the team finished third in the Bundesliga and qualified for the Champions League. BVB then invested heavily in players like Jan Koller and Márcio Amoroso, leading to their sixth German championship in 2002, where they finished five points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen. That season, they also reached the UEFA Cup final, losing 3:2 to Feyenoord Rotterdam, after a notable semi-final victory over AC Milan.
