In the 1996-97 season, Pavel Nedvěd, a midfielder who gained prominence during the last European Championships with the Czech Republic, joined Lazio. The club also acquired Igor Protti, the top scorer from the previous tournament. Lazio finished in fourth place, securing another UEFA Cup qualification. Under coach Zdenek Zeman, they collected 23 points in the first half of the season. However, after a disappointing home loss (1-2) to Bologna on the first day of the second half, Zeman was dismissed. Dino Zoff took over as coach and revitalized the team, leading them to gather 32 points in the remaining 16 matches, finishing fourth with a total of 54 points. Lazio's UEFA Cup campaign ended against Tenerife, who won the return match 5-3, overturning Lazio's 1-0 victory in the first leg of the round of 16. In the earlier rounds, Lazio had defeated French side Lens in the 32nd finals. In the Coppa Italia, Lazio advanced past Avellino in the second round but was eliminated by Verona in the third round, and then lost to Napoli in the quarter-finals. Beppe Signori was the season's top scorer with 15 goals.
