The 1988–89 season was Liverpool F.C.’s 27th consecutive year in the First Division, running from August 20, 1988, to May 26, 1989. This season was marked by the tragic Hillsborough disaster on April 15, 1989, when 94 fans died in a crush during the FA Cup semi-final; a 95th fan died three days later, with two more deaths linked to the incident in subsequent years. Liverpool won the rescheduled semi-final and went on to claim the FA Cup, defeating Everton 3–2 in the final. However, they missed out on the league title for the second consecutive season in dramatic fashion, losing 2–0 to Arsenal at Anfield due to a last-minute goal. Throughout the season, they were often in the title race, contending with Arsenal, Norwich City, Coventry City, and newly promoted Millwall. A late surge in form briefly put them at the top of the league before the penultimate match.
