In 2006, the club secured its seventh FA Cup title in a thrilling final against West Ham United. After falling behind 2-0 within the first 28 minutes, the Reds demonstrated the same determination that led to their triumph in Istanbul the previous year. Goals from Djibril Cissé and captain Steven Gerrard brought them level. After going behind again on the hour mark, Liverpool equalized in the dying moments with a powerful strike from Gerrard, who scored twice in the match. With no winner in extra time, the teams headed to a penalty shootout, which Liverpool ultimately won. On February 6, 2007, George N. Gillett Jr. and billionaire Tom Hicks purchased the club. During the 2006-2007 season, the team reached another Champions League final against AC Milan but lost 2-1. In the offseason, the club invested heavily to acquire young Spanish talent Fernando Torres from Atlético Madrid. Torres quickly adapted to the demands of English football, becoming one of Europe's top scorers. He finished third in the 2008 Ballon d'Or rankings and formed a strong partnership with Gerrard, one of the league's best playmakers, helping the Reds achieve several impressive runs in European competitions. In the 2007-2008 season, the team reached the Champions League semi-finals but finished fourth in the league, disappointing fans who were eager for another English league title.
