After Salzburg's surprising title win in the 1996/97 season, Sturm Graz and FC Tirol dominated Austrian football in the following years. While FK Austria Wien struggled, Rapid Vienna finished as runners-up four times between 1997 and 2001. Following their second-place finish in 1997, Dokupil became the sporting director, with Heribert Weber taking over as coach. In the 1997/98 UEFA Cup, Rapid advanced to the round of 16 but lost to Lazio. Sturm Graz secured two consecutive championships during this period, while Rapid consistently finished in the top three, qualifying for international competitions but failing to achieve significant success. In the 1998/99 UEFA Cup, they were eliminated in the first round by Girondins Bordeaux, and a year later, they suffered a heavy defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League qualifiers. Weber was replaced due to lack of success, and Dokupil returned as coach, but the team only managed a second-place finish in 2001. Notably, they signed Dejan Savićević between 1999 and 2001, but injuries limited his impact. Gaston Taument, signed from 2000 to 2002, also failed to meet expectations.
