In the 1991–92 season, Stuttgart secured their fourth title in one of the tightest races in Bundesliga history, finishing just ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. However, their international campaign was less successful, as they were eliminated from the UEFA Cup that season after losing 3-2 to Osasuna in the second round. As national champions, they qualified for the UEFA Champions League in 1992–93 but were knocked out in the first round by Leeds United after a decisive third match in Barcelona, which was necessary because coach Christoph Daum had substituted a fourth non-German player in the second leg. VfB Stuttgart did not qualify for any European competitions again until 1997, when they won the German Cup for the third time under coach Joachim Löw. Upon their return to Europe, they reached the 1998 European Cup Winners' Cup final in Stockholm, where they were defeated by Chelsea in the penultimate year of the competition. By that time, only one member of the "magic triangle," captain Krassimir Balakov, remained, as Giovane Élber and Fredi Bobic had departed. Löw's contract was not renewed, and he was succeeded by Winfried Schäfer, who was subsequently sacked after just one season.
