FC Groningen's 1996/97 season marked the club's 26th year in Dutch professional football and their seventeenth consecutive year in the Eredivisie. The season began with the UEFA Intertoto Cup, but after four matches, the team finished third in their group, which meant they were eliminated from the tournament. The Eredivisie campaign was challenging, with disappointing results, including a 1-5 home defeat to SC Heerenveen and a 2-4 loss to De Graafschap. Following a heavy 6-1 defeat away at Vitesse, coach Hans Westerhof was dismissed, despite having recently signed a one-year contract extension. Assistant coach Jan van Dijk took over as interim coach, tasked with keeping the team out of relegation. Under his guidance, the team ultimately finished in 10th place in the league. In the KNVB Cup, Groningen was eliminated in the second round after losing 2-0 at home to Willem II.
