After a disappointing previous season, Massimo Moratti appointed former Valencia coach Héctor Cúper as the new head coach of Inter Milan. Cúper revamped the squad by signing players like Toldo, Materazzi, Kallon, and Ventola. The team started strongly, leading the league and performing well in Europe. However, 2001 ended on a somber note with the death of vice-chairman Giuseppe Prisco. As the season progressed, Inter showed signs of fatigue, suffering a 1–2 home loss to Atalanta followed by a European exit. Before their final league match against Lazio, Inter was at the top, just ahead of Juventus and Roma. Despite scoring twice in the first half, they allowed Lazio to equalize and ultimately lost 4–2, dropping to third place. This result still secured a spot in the Champions League playoffs for the next season and marked Ronaldo's final game for the club.
