On April 3, 2005, the club celebrated its centennial, known as the Xentennial, with 50,000 supporters and iconic player Diego Maradona attending the massive event. A few weeks later, under coach Alfio Basile, the club started the 2005-2006 season, winning both league tournaments. In early 2007, with Miguel Angel Russo as coach and key players Riquelme and Palermo returning from Europe, the team won the Copa Libertadores for the sixth time, defeating Brazil's Gremio 5-0 on aggregate in the final, just one win shy of the record held by Independiente.
