After claiming the title in 1992, the club faced a severe financial crisis leading to a decline in domestic and international successes. In their centenary year of 1995, sports broadcaster Kléber Leite assumed ownership and acquired striker Romário, the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year, from Barcelona. Romário joined Sávio and Edmundo to form the celebrated 'dream attack' as dubbed by fans. Despite their star-studded lineup, Flamengo ended their centenary season without major trophies, except for the Taça Guanabara, awarded to the winners of the first phase of the Carioca championship. They also suffered defeat in the double final of the 1995 South American Super Cup against Independiente.
