After eight years wearing the Rossoneri shirt, Marco van Basten chose to retire due to recurring ankle issues, sidelining him for two seasons. The club's signings included Roberto Baggio, the 1993 Golden Ball winner from Juventus, and George Weah, the 1995 FIFA World Player and African Footballer of the Year, purchased from Paris Saint-Germain. Additionally, nineteen-year-old Vieira joined the team, mainly serving as a reserve due to his young age.

This season marked the reappearance of the club's coat of arms on the shirts, positioned below the star. The emblem displayed an oval featuring the club colors and the flag of Milan, with ACM above and the founding year (1899) below. The introduction of fixed player numbers on the back of the shirts was also standardized.

Milan started the championship strongly with four consecutive victories, including a notable win against reigning champions Juventus. They claimed the top spot in the standings early on and maintained it for most of the season. The Scudetto was secured with a 3-1 home win against Fiorentina, two days before the end of the season, with Weah scoring 11 goals throughout the campaign.

In the Coppa Italia, Milan reached the quarter-finals but were eliminated by Bologna in a penalty shootout, with Francesco Coco missing a crucial penalty. In the UEFA Cup, Milan progressed through the early rounds but were eliminated by Bordeaux in the quarter-finals, despite winning the first leg.

At the end of the season, Roberto Donadoni departed for the New York MetroStars, while coach Fabio Capello left for Real Madrid, ending a successful tenure that included four national titles and a Champions League triumph.
