For the second year running, AC Milan failed to retain their European Cup title. Despite securing second place in Serie A, it marked their fourth consecutive season finishing in the league's top three. However, a defeat in the European Cup quarter-finals led to their first trophyless season since 1987. This outcome prompted Arrigo Sacchi to step down from his position, making way for Fabio Capello, a former Juventus and AC Milan midfielder, to take over as manager.
