Leo Beenhakker took over as coach on July 1, 1989, with Spitz Kohn and Louis van Gaal joining as his assistants. Midway through 1989, Pal Fischer and Edwin van der Sar were included in the squad. The 1989/90 season saw Ajax reclaim the championship after a five-year drought. The team boasted talents like Dennis Bergkamp, Stefan Pettersson, brothers Rob and Richard Witschge, Bryan Roy, Aron Winter, and Marciano Vink. However, the 1990/91season was marred by a bar incident on September 27, 1989, resulting in a ban on European football. Despite this setback, Ajax narrowly missed out on the league title. They tied with PSV on points (both with 53), but PSV secured the title due to a slightly superior goal difference (+56compared to Ajax's +54).
