In the 2002–03 season, Ajax experienced their first full campaign under Ronald Koeman. He signed Victor Sikora from Vitesse and Nourdin Boukhari from Sparta, and re-signed Jari Litmanen. The season was challenging due to significant injuries to Rafael van der Vaart, Jari Litmanen, and John Heitinga. However, young players Nigel de Jong and Wesley Sneijder emerged from Ajax's reserve team and played regularly for the first team. Ajax had a notable run in the Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals before losing to AC Milan in the final minute. Despite Koeman being named Coach of the Year, Ajax did not secure any trophies. They were eliminated in the KNVB Cup semi-finals and finished the league season in a close second place, which qualified them for the Champions League preliminary rounds.
