Ajax kicked off the season with a 3-1 victory over PSV in the Johan Cruijff Schaal but faced elimination in the third preliminary round of the Champions League, losing to Copenhagen (a 2-1 win in Denmark followed by a 2-0 defeat in Amsterdam).
