This season began without Jesper Grønkjær, who moved to Chelsea, and without Brian Laudrup, who retired. Co Adriaanse, who had led Willem II to second place in the 1998-1999 championship, took over as coach.

Ajax was eliminated from the KNVB Cup by Vitesse in the round of 16, and their UEFA Cup run ended in the second round against Lausanne. After a 9-0 aggregate win against Gent, they lost 1-0 in Switzerland and drew 2-2 in Amsterdam. In the league, Ajax finished in third place behind PSV and Feyenoord, showing improvement from their last two seasons.
