Arsenal FC finished the 2010/2011 Premier League season in fourth place with 68 points, 12 behind champions Manchester United and just three points shy of Chelsea and Manchester City. In the UEFA Champions League, they reached the round of 16 but were eliminated by FC Barcelona, the same team that had knocked them out the previous season. In the FA Cup, Arsenal were knocked out in the sixth round by Manchester United with a 2-0 defeat. Despite focusing on the League Cup, Arsenal lost the final 1-2 to Birmingham City, who uniquely qualified for the UEFA Europa League play-offs as a relegated team and later advanced to the group stage as a second-tier side.
Arsenal's title hopes faded due to a poor finish to the season, with three draws, three defeats, and only two wins in their last eight games, earning just 15 points during that period. Veteran goalkeeper Jens Lehmann returned to the club at 41 as a reserve. Manager Arsène Wenger rotated goalkeepers, giving 20-year-old Wojciech Szczęsny 15 Premier League appearances, Łukasz Fabiański 14 appearances, and Manuel Almunia eight. Robin van Persie had his best season yet, scoring 22 goals in all competitions.
