Arsenal FC secured second place in the 2000/2001 Premier League season, marking their third consecutive acknowledgment of Manchester United's superiority. Despite reaching the FA Cup final, Arsenal fell short against Liverpool, losing 1-2, with Michael Owen scoring both goals for Liverpool. Robert Pirès filled the void on the left flank left by Marc Overmars, who departed for FC Barcelona, while striker Dennis Bergkamp remained with the club. However, Sylvain Wiltord, signed from Girondins de Bordeaux, was often favored over Bergkamp this season alongside dominant club top scorer Thierry Henry (22 goals in all competitions). Nigel Winterburn, a longstanding left-back and club legend whose contract had ended, departed after 13 seasons to join West Ham United. David Seaman, Lee Dixon, and captain Tony Adams, the experienced players, retained their positions in the squad. Lauren Etame Mayer, a Cameroonian recruit from RCD Mallorca, provided competition for Dixon at right-back. In the League Cup, Arsenal exited early after the third round, continuing their trend of underperformance in England's secondary cup competition, with Ipswich Town causing the upset.
