The 2005/2006 season marked the first under new coach Louis van Gaal and the last for AZ at the old Alkmaarderhout stadium. The club also said goodbye to technical director Martin van Geel, who left for Ajax, a move that created tension as he had previously stated he didn't want to leave Alkmaar. His successor, Marcel Brands, joined from RKC Waalwijk. AZ finished the season in second place in the league, but lost to FC Groningen in the play-offs for direct qualification to the UEFA Champions League, officially placing them fourth in the standings. In the UEFA Cup, they reached the third round before being eliminated by Real Betis, though they remained unbeaten at home in Europe. AZ also reached the semi-finals of the Gatorade Cup but lost to PSV. The final match of the season featured teams organized by players Barry van Galen and Michael Buskermolen, serving as a farewell to both players and the Alkmaarderhout stadium.
