During the summer transfer window, Bayern Munich signed Jürgen Klinsmann and Andreas Herzog, with Otto Rehhagel taking over as team manager. Despite being eliminated in the second round of the German Cup by Fortuna Düsseldorf, they excelled in the UEFA Cup. After a 1-0 home loss to Lokomotiv Moscow, Bayern won 5-0 in the return leg, advancing to the round of 16. They then consecutively defeated Raith Rovers, Benfica, and Nottingham Forest, winning all their matches and reaching the semi-finals. There, they faced Barcelona, winning 2-1 at Camp Nou after a 2-2 draw in the first leg, and advanced to the final. Throughout the season, Bayern alternated at the top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund. On April 27, after a home defeat to Hansa Rostock, the teams were tied for first place. Franz Beckenbauer then returned as coach, and Bayern won both legs against Bordeaux in the UEFA Cup final, securing the only major UEFA club competition they had not yet won, with Klinsmann as the top scorer. However, Bayern finished the Bundesliga in second place, six points behind Borussia Dortmund.
