Blackpool enjoyed one of their strongest campaigns in years during the 1995–96 season, finishing 3rd in Division Two, their highest league position since 1976–77, and earning a place in the promotion play‑offs. Under Sam Allardyce, the team looked well‑organised and competitive, winning the first leg of the play‑off semi‑final 2–0 before suffering a dramatic 3–0 defeat at home to Bradford City, a collapse that ultimately cost Allardyce his job. Despite early exits in both the FA Cup and League Cup, Blackpool’s league form, strong home performances, and a balanced attack made the season one of promise that ended in frustration.

Blackpool’s 1996–97 campaign marked a transitional year as the club adjusted to life under new manager Gary Megson, finishing 7th in Division Two after narrowly missing promotion the previous season. The team showed patches of strong form but lacked the consistency needed to secure a play‑off place, while cup runs were short-lived with exits in the FA Cup and League Cup both coming in the second round. A bright spot was the continued scoring reliability of Tony Ellis, who topped the club’s charts for the third straight year with 18 goals in all competitions. The season also marked the 100th anniversary of Blackpool’s first Football League match, adding historical significance to an otherwise steady but unspectacular year.
