At the 1982 World Cup in Spain, Brazil entered as tournament favorites and dominated the early stages, defeating the Soviet Union 2–1, Scotland 4–1, and New Zealand 4–0 in the southern cities of Seville and Málaga. Advancing to the second round of round-robin matches at the Sarrià Stadium in Barcelona, Brazil easily overcame a demoralized Argentina 3–1, effectively eliminating their South American rivals who had previously lost to Italy 2–1. Brazil seemed poised to reach the semi-finals, but a 3–2 defeat to Italy in one of the most memorable matches in World Cup history eliminated them from the tournament. This match, known as "Sarrià's Disaster" due to the name of the stadium and the ensuing disappointment, is a poignant memory for Brazilian fans. The 1982 team, featuring players like Sócrates, Zico, Falcão, and Éder, is often regarded as one of the greatest teams never to win a World Cup.
