The country made its debut in the Africa Cup of Nations in 1978 but didn't return to the tournament until 1996. From 1996 to 2004, they qualified for five consecutive editions, reaching the semi-finals in 1998 under coach Philippe Troussier when the tournament was hosted on home soil. Burkina Faso first entered the World Cup qualifying tournament in 1978, where they defeated Mauritania in the preliminary round but lost 3–1 to Ivory Coast in the next round. They attempted to qualify again in 1990, but were eliminated in the first round by Libya with a score of 3–2. Although Burkina Faso withdrew from the 1994 competition, they returned in 1998, again defeating Mauritania to reach the final qualifying group stage. However, they failed to earn any points, finishing at the bottom of their group. In 2002, they won against Ethiopia to reach the qualifying group stage once more but did not advance, managing just one victory against Malawi.
