Chelsea’s 2003–04 season marked the beginning of a new era. Following Roman Abramovich’s takeover in the summer of 2003, the club invested heavily in players such as Claude Makélélé, Damien Duff, Joe Cole, Hernán Crespo, and Adrian Mutu, transforming Chelsea from a top-four contender into a genuine force. Under Claudio Ranieri, the Blues finished 2nd in the Premier League, their highest league position in nearly 50 years, and secured automatic qualification for the Champions League. In Europe, Chelsea reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in their history, famously eliminating Arsenal before losing to Monaco. Although they ended the season without a trophy, the campaign laid the foundations for the dominant Mourinho era that followed.

Chelsea’s 2004–05 season was the beginning of a new dynasty. In José Mourinho’s first year at Stamford Bridge, the Blues transformed from challengers into champions, producing one of the greatest defensive seasons in English football history. Chelsea won the Premier League with a then-record 95 points, conceding just 15 goals in 38 matches. Powered by the spine of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Claude Makélélé, and goalkeeper Petr Čech, Chelsea combined resilience with efficiency and lost only one league game all season. They also won the League Cup, beating Liverpool in the final, and reached the Champions League semi-finals, where they were controversially eliminated by Liverpool. The season established Chelsea as England’s dominant force and marked the start of the Mourinho era's success.
