Club Brugge parted ways with coach Hugo Broos after six seasons, as he moved to Excelsior Moeskroen in 1997. Eric Gerets, who had just won the title with Lierse SK, took over as the new head coach. In the summer, top scorer Robert Špehar transferred to AS Monaco for BEF 150 million. To compensate for his departure, the club signed young striker Nordin Jbari and attacking midfielders Khalilou Fadiga and Darko Anić. During the winter, Lithuanian striker Edgaras Jankauskas was also brought in. Gerets led the team to their second consecutive championship. The squad was a blend of seasoned players like Franky Van der Elst, Vital Borkelmans, and Lorenzo Staelens, along with young talents like Eric Addo, Fadiga, Jbari, and Jankauskas. Club Brugge had a strong start to the season, distancing themselves from competitors early on. Despite a 3-0 loss to Racing Genk after the winter break, they secured the title following a defeat by Genk against Gerets' former team. Brugge celebrated by winning 0-1 against RSC Anderlecht. Gerets was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year, while 19-year-old Addo received the Ebony Shoe and Young Professional Footballer of the Year awards. Club Brugge aimed for the double but lost 4-0 to vice-champion Genk in the cup final, marking the heaviest cup final defeat since 1981. In the UEFA Cup, they reached the round of 16 but were eliminated by VfL Bochum, similar to their exit by a German team the previous season
