Crystal Palace’s 1997–98 season was a brave but ultimately unsuccessful fight against relegation in the Premier League. Fresh from promotion, Palace changed managers multiple times, with Steve Coppell, Attilio Lombardo, and Tomas Brolin all taking charge at different stages of a turbulent campaign. Despite the instability, Palace remained competitive in many matches and pulled off memorable victories over Liverpool, Newcastle and Wimbledon. Italian star Attilio Lombardo brought quality and leadership, while young striker Dougie Freedman provided crucial goals. Relegation was confirmed on the final day of the season despite a dramatic 2–2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday, leaving Palace just one point short of safety. The season is remembered as a spirited battle in which the club came agonisingly close to surviving.
