Deprotivo ended at a sensational 3rd place in the 1996-1997 season led by legendary Rivaldo who became topscorer with 21 goals. They finished just after FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. As a result, Deportivo participated in the Uefa Cup in the 1997–98 season. However, they were eliminated early in the UEFA Cup by Auxerre and struggled in the league, leading to Silva's dismissal in October. José Manuel Corral took over but could only guide Deportivo to a 12th place finish and a quarter-final exit in the Copa del Rey.
