Terry Venables took over as manager without needing to play any qualifying matches since the 1996 European Championship was hosted in England. However, the FA was still looking for a new coach and decided in December 1995 not to renew Venables' contract due to an investigation into financial misconduct. Regardless of the tournament's outcome, he would leave after the championship. Criticism arose when, just before the tournament, players led by Paul Gascoigne were spotted drunk in a Hong Kong nightclub. The situation didn’t improve when England drew 1-1 with Switzerland in their opening match. A week later, they defeated Scotland 2-0, aided by a missed penalty from the Scots and a brilliant play by Gascoigne. The final group match was a standout performance, with England beating the Netherlands 4-1, thanks to two goals each from Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham. In the quarter-finals, they triumphed over Spain in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw. The semi-final against Germany began dramatically, with the score level at 1-1 after 15 minutes, as Shearer scored for England and became the tournament's top scorer. During extra time, both teams attacked relentlessly, and Gascoigne nearly scored the 'golden goal.' Ultimately, the match went to penalties; after both sides converted five spot-kicks, Gareth Southgate missed, allowing Andreas Möller to send Germany to the final.
