In 2002, Porto appointed José Mourinho, the former União de Leiria coach who had previously assisted Robson at the club. During his introduction, Mourinho confidently declared that Porto would win the league title the following season. He fulfilled this promise, leading Porto through one of their most successful seasons. With a squad featuring Deco, Ricardo Carvalho, Maniche, and lesser-known players from other Portuguese clubs such as Paulo Ferreira, Pedro Emanuel, Nuno Valente, and Derlei, Porto comfortably won the 2002–03 Primeira Liga, finishing 11 points ahead of Benfica. The club also claimed the UEFA Cup, defeating Celtic in a dramatic extra-time final, marking their second major European title. Mourinho capped the season by winning the Taça de Portugal final against his former club, securing an unprecedented treble for Porto.
