Feyenoord made their debut in the UEFA Champions League in 1997–98, finishing third in their group behind Manchester United and Juventus. However, they managed to beat Juventus 2–0 in Rotterdam, with both goals scored by Julio Cruz. In 1998, Feyenoord was investigated by the FIOD-ECD due to suspected fraud related to player signings like Aurelio Vidmar, Christian Gyan, and Patrick Allotey. This scandal continued in the following years, with club chairman Jorien van den Herik being the main suspect. Despite this, Feyenoord secured their 14th Dutch Championship on 25 April 1999, celebrated by 250,000 fans in Rotterdam, though the celebrations turned into heavy rioting later in the evening. Before the 1999–2000 season, Feyenoord defeated Ajax in their own stadium to win their second Dutch Super Cup title, with a free-kick goal by Patrick Paauwe securing a 3–2 victory.
