Having begun his career in the youth ranks at Staggia Senese and later Inter, Stefano Bettarini made his debut in Serie C1during the 1991-1992season with Baracca Lugo. The following season, he stepped up to Serie B with Lucchese, where he spent three seasons, interrupted by a brief spell at Salernitana. In 1996-1997, he joined Cagliari in Serie A, making his debut on September 8, 1996, in a match against Atalanta, which Cagliari won 2-0. The following year, he transferred to Fiorentina for a fee of 3.5billion lire, before moving on to Bologna, Venezia, and eventually Sampdoria in September 2002. At Fiorentina, the left back made 18 appearances.
