Under Hidalgo's management, France thrived, thanks to the talents of outstanding players like defenders Marius Trésor and Maxime Bossis, striker Dominique Rocheteau, and midfielder Michel Platini. Alongside Jean Tigana, Alain Giresse, and Luis Fernández, they formed the "carré magique" ("Magic Square"), which began to challenge opposing defenses at the 1982 World Cup. France reached the semi-finals but lost to West Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout, a match often regarded as one of the greatest in World Cup history, marked by its controversies. Ultimately, France finished fourth, losing the third-place playoff 3–2 to Poland. Two years later, France secured their first major international title by winning Euro 1984, which they hosted. Led by Platini, who scored a tournament-high nine goals, France triumphed over Spain 2–0 in the final, with goals from Platini and Bruno Bellone. Following this victory, Hidalgo stepped down and was succeeded by former international Henri Michel. Under Michel, France clinched gold at the 1984 Summer Olympics and, the following year, defeated Uruguay 2–0 to win the Artemio Franchi Trophy, an early precursor to the FIFA Confederations Cup, with goals from Dominique Rocheteau and José Touré. In just one year, France held three of the four major international trophies. At the 1986 World Cup, they reached the semi-finals again, facing West Germany. Although they were defeated, they secured third place with a 4–2 victory over Belgium.
