After the 1990 World Cup, Franz Beckenbauer stepped down as team manager, and Berti Vogts, previously the DFB youth coach and part of Beckenbauer's staff from 1986 to 1990, took over. His first challenge was to qualify for the 1992 European Championships in Sweden, where an all-German team competed for the first time, having beaten Wales in the qualifiers. The GDR (East Germany) had been in the same qualifying group, and their match against Belgium was the last for the GDR national team, as it was canceled after reunification. A planned "unification match" between the DFB team and the DFV team on reunification day was also canceled due to threats of violence and the poor condition of Leipzig's central stadium. On December 19, 1990, an all-German team played together for the first time in Stuttgart against Switzerland. Despite some lackluster performances in the group stage of the European Championships, including a 3-1 loss to the Netherlands, Germany advanced to the final for the fourth time after a strong showing against hosts Sweden. They entered the final as favorites but unexpectedly lost 2-0 to Denmark. Karl-Heinz Riedle did share the top scorer title with three others, each netting three goals.
