Germany’s 2006 World Cup campaign on home soil reignited the nation’s passion for football and marked the beginning of a new era under Jürgen Klinsmann. Entering the tournament with modest expectations, Germany played exciting, attacking football, defeating Costa Rica, Poland and Ecuador to top their group. They then beat Sweden in the Round of 16 and overcame Argentina on penalties in a dramatic quarter-final. The dream of lifting the trophy at home ended with a 2–0 extra-time defeat to Italy in the semi-finals, but Germany recovered to beat Portugal 3–1 and secure third place. With a young squad featuring emerging stars alongside experienced leaders, the tournament transformed Germany’s image from pragmatic to entertaining and laid the foundations for future success, culminating in the 2014 World Cup triumph.
