At the 1994 World Cup in the USA, for which Germany qualified as defending champions, the German team won the opening match for the first time as reigning world champions, with a 1-0 win over Bolivia being enough to secure victory. After a 1:1 draw against Spain, South Korea were narrowly defeated 3:2 and the team finished top of the group. Stefan Effenberg was excluded from the team by national coach Vogts during the tournament because he had acknowledged provocations from German fans with an outstretched middle finger during this match. Germany went on to beat Belgium 3:2 in the round of 16, before losing 2:1 in the quarter-finals to Bulgaria, who had never before made it past the round of 16 at any World Cup, after initially taking the lead. This was the first time since the 1978 World Cup that the German team had failed to reach the top four at a World Cup finals.
