The European champion began the qualification for the 1998 World Cup with an aging team that still included players from the 1990 World Cup-winning squad. During the campaign, Matthias Sammer and Dieter Eilts were sidelined due to injuries, and the once-dangerous Jürgen Klinsmann only managed to score twice against Armenia. Germany topped their group with a two-point lead over Ukraine. In the World Cup, Germany opened with a 2-0 victory against the United States, with goals from Andreas Möller and Klinsmann. Against Yugoslavia, they fell 0-2 behind but were helped by an own goal from the Yugoslavs, and Oliver Bierhoff scored the equalizer in the 80th minute. In the final group match, they defeated Iran and became group winners thanks to a better goal difference than Yugoslavia. Klinsmann and Bierhoff, who had also scored against Iran, repeated their feat in the round of 16 against Mexico. In the quarter-finals, Germany suffered a heavy 0-3 defeat to Croatia, marking their worst World Cup loss since 1958. For the second consecutive World Cup, Germany failed to reach the semi-finals. After two unconvincing friendly matches against Malta and Romania in September 1998, with a rejuvenated team, coach Berti Vogts resigned.
